PITTSBURGH DOWNTOWN PARTNERSHIP IS SEEKING INNOVATIVE BUSINESSES TO HELP ACTIVATE DOWNTOWN
ENTREPRENEURS SOUGHT TO DEMONSTRATE PRODUCTS AND UNIQUE SOLUTIONS

Downtown Pittsburgh, PA – The Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership today announced the details of BetaBurgh a new initiative that will invest in innovative ideas from the startup, entrepreneur, and small business communities in Pittsburgh. The program will create an opportunity to test and launch products and services within the Downtown marketplace. Today’s announcement released a Request for Proposals that encourages small businesses to establish a stronger connection to a potential customer base by using Downtown as a test bed for their product or idea. Applicants are asked to activate a Downtown space, anything from engaging pedestrians through interactive tools, programs, devices, or technology, or by implementing a new, creative physical infrastructure in the space itself that will also advance their business concept or demonstrate new technology or products.

BetaBurgh will award grants of up to $10,000 to local and regional entrepreneurs and early-stage businesses to use their products for implementable ideas that activate public spaces in Downtown Pittsburgh. Successful demonstrations will engage with and enhance the experiences of the broader Downtown community of more than 120,000 daytime workers, millions of annual visitors, and over 12,000 residents by providing amenities and engaging audiences in public spaces with new and innovative products and ideas developed in Pittsburgh.
“We are looking forward to supporting innovation in our region and seeing how new products and services may interact with and enhance the Downtown environment,” said Jeremy Waldrup, President and CEO of the Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership. “The entrepreneurial community in Pittsburgh is incredibly creative and inventive and we are looking forward seeing some exciting proposals.”

The program has been financially supported by the BNY Mellon Foundation of Southwestern Pennsylvania with technical assistance provided by Innovation Works, AlphaLab and AlphaLab Gear, the Urban Redevelopment Authority, and Thrill Mill.

According to Terri Glueck, Director, Communications and Community Development for Innovation Works, “The opportunity to demonstrate conceptual ideas and products and gain exposure to new customers and input from the public is really exciting to a startup and entrepreneur. BetaBurgh takes it further by providing a meaningful investment to take this demonstration into the heart of Downtown Pittsburgh. Innovation Works is excited to support this new program and to continue supporting Pittsburgh’s startup community.”

An information session will be held on Tuesday, February 9, 2016 at 5:30 p.m. at the Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership office, 925 Liberty Avenue, 4th Floor, 15222. Initial projects and participants are expected to be unveiled at the PDP’s Annual Meeting on March 15, 2016.

The RFP is available online at www.BetaBurgh.com.
