#TBT: Brewing Craft Before Craft was Cool at Penn Brewery

While the modern-day Penn Brewery started in 1986, did you know that their roots run back to 1848 when the North Side was the City of Allegheny? Three breweries operated in the site where Penn Brewery exists today, and three of the buildings from that era are still part of the current Penn Brewery.

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Penn Brewery is unique in its use of chilling, or “lagering,” caves that run deep underground today. Today, Penn Brewery continues the tradition of being one of the earliest pioneers in the American craft movement.
