Out and About: A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum

As a theater geek in high school, I established a list of musicals and plays I simply had to see in my lifetime. A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum made that list, admittedly only because it’s considered a classic. It was like telling myself I had to read John Steinbeck: I didn’t actually have genuine interest in doing it, it was mostly out of an obligation of cultural relevancy.

But last week, I finally crossed Forum off my list and saw Pittsburgh Public Theater’s production. And my expectations of witnessing a tired, stodgy “classic” were blown away. Of course, I shouldn’t be surprised: every production I’ve seen from PPT proves Ted Pappas and his team could make a corpse exciting. Luckily, they had much more to work with.

Set in ancient Rome, Forum tells the story of roman slave Pseudolous who convinces his young master Hero to grant him his freedom on the condition that Pseudolous wins Hero the affection of the girl next door. Except the girl next door happens to be a courtesan who is already betrothed to a pompous, self-absorbed soldier. Hilarity ensues.

The book and music are quick-witted, charming, and facetious. The writing allows for plenty of room for creative freedom and moments in the spotlight, and the extremely talented cast takes advantage of that, going beyond what you’d find in the script. The plot is inherently comical, full of immature, star-crossed lovers, botched potions, foolish pirates, and general ridiculous debauchery. The opening number “Comedy Tonight” makes it clear from the get-go that you will enjoy yourself for the next two hours, and I absolutely did.

Be forewarned, this production definitely isn’t for the little ones; most of the musical’s best humor is incredibly raunchy, and not in a subtle way the kids would miss. The show runs through February 25; get your tickets here.
