Data Shows Downtown Rebound is Well Underway

Tuesday, March 22, 2022

While overall pandemic recovery remains slow, Downtown Pittsburgh continues to be a center of activity with increasingly positive reactivation signs.

Monthly reports produced by the Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership to track employee, visitor, resident, public space, and transportation activity continue to indicate a robust recovery is in progress.

Recent highlights from the March Reactivation Report include:

  • Average daily activity in the Golden Triangle is also at the highest volume we have seen since February 2020 at close to 77,000 people on average, with February 2022 at 55% of February 2019 levels.
  • The number of daily employees continues to increase with the highest level of Downtown employee activity seen since March 2020, with an average of 26,000 workers on a daily basis.
  • Downtown visitors continue to make up the largest share of monthly activity. Visitor estimates from February 2022 show a 73% recovery compared to pre-Covid levels with a significant increase thanks to cultural attractions like Hamilton’s 3 week, 24 show run at the Benedum Theater.
  • Local and national tourism continues to show a strong resurgence, with local tourism at 79% and national tourism at 72% recovered compared to pre-Covid levels.

Additional details can be found in the full report.

Over the past two months, Downtown has seen a number of businesses open (and reopen), including a new Adda Bazaar on Penn Avenue and the return of Meat & Potatoes.
