Welcome, 2024: Looking Ahead at a New Year in Downtown Pittsburgh

Thursday, January 4, 2024

As we head into 2024 with renewed hope and purpose, we’re taking a moment to reflect on what we’ve learned and accomplished last year.

2023 was a remarkable one for Downtown Pittsburgh. Over the last 12 months, Downtown stakeholders and local government have worked hard to sustain momentum and reinvigorate the Golden Triangle through programs that engage and inspire those who live, work and visit. With over 90,000 people coming into Downtown every day, we are forging a path of continued resilience and growth for our city and the entire region.

Many beloved traditions returned in 2023, alongside new initiatives that elevated the Downtown experience in innovative and impactful ways.

The launch of our Golden Triangle Ambassador program and the significant expansion of our Clean and Outreach Teams—thanks to vital support from the corporate and philanthropic sectors—played a pivotal role in fostering cleaner and more welcoming streets. Public realm improvements, with an emphasis on public art, greening and placemaking, have also created more vibrant spaces for our community to gather and connect. Market Square and Mellon Square hosted a robust lineup of live music, local vendors, and unique events throughout the summer, breathing new energy into these iconic locations.

From this year’s record-breaking attendance at Picklesburgh and the resounding success of the Three Rivers Arts Festival and Juneteenth, to the enthusiastic turnouts at the 62nd anniversary of Light Up Night and the Cultural District’s First Night, one thing is clear: people are excited to find new and familiar experiences Downtown.

Our small business and residential communities continue to grow and thrive.

There were 20 business openings in 2023, along with ongoing efforts to transform vacant storefronts with creative pop-up retail and art. With almost 7,000 residents in Downtown – a 90% increase since 2010 and 21% increase since 2019 – we are seeing more people call the Golden Triangle home than ever before.

Looking ahead to 2024, we are keen to build on the successes of the past year, while tackling the challenges that remain.

We can’t do this work alone, and we want to thank every one of our community and corporate partners, sponsors and supporters who have helped us achieve our goals in 2023. We look forward to continuing to collaborate and build on this meaningful work in the new year and beyond.

As we share our plans for the year, we invite you to stay connected and be an active participant in Downtown Pittsburgh’s evolving story.

We look forward to seeing you in Downtown in 2024!
