Out and About: Chevere

Tuesday, August 8, 2017

Let’s set the scene. It’s lunchtime. You’re starving. You want something fast, but you’re sick of Subway. You want something delicious, but you don’t want to break the bank. Enter Chevere. Let’s be honest: we tell you about some pretty great spots, but this new South American street food joint is something special.

Chevere is located at 412 Cherry Way, which used to be Pittsburgh Poultry Company, which used to be Primanti’s in the old Kaufmann’s garage. The place consists of only a few standing tables and the order counter, but the service is friendly, eager, and fast. I ordered a combination meal consisting of an order of beans and rice and an arepa (pictured. The same concept as a sandwich but with soft, fried cornmeal as the bread, and way, way yummier.)

The arepa was a game-changer. It was stuffed with pulled chicken, sweet plantains (a personal favorite), black beans, and cotija cheese, and it was topped with lime and the best salsa verde I’ve ever eaten. It felt like my mouth was taking a vacation.

Combined with dining in front of the fountain in Mellon Square on a gorgeous day, it was the perfect lunch break. Chevere is definitely my new go-to lunch spot, and I highly recommend you make it yours.
