Preserved cobblestones, growing tree canopy, and expanded merchant support signal progress
June 24, 2025 – Construction on the highly anticipated modernization of Market Square has been underway for two months, marking on-time progress in one of Downtown’s most iconic and active public spaces. Early milestones include the preservation and planned reuse of roadway cobblestones, enhancements to the Square’s tree canopy, expanded support for merchants, and the launch of a creative community campaign “Sing the Sign” aimed at keeping the area vibrant and welcoming throughout construction.
The project, led by the Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership (PDP), is part of the broader revitalization of Downtown announced in 2024 by the Allegheny Conference on Community Development, Allegheny County, City of Pittsburgh, Urban Redevelopment Authority, and Governor Josh Shapiro. The project is scheduled for completion in April 2026, just in time to welcome visitors for the NFL Draft.
“This transformation is about more than infrastructure; it’s about the rise of the new Downtown Pittsburgh. Summer looks a bit different in the Square this year, but we’re committed to keeping the area welcoming and connected to nearby activities all summer long. We encourage everyone to come down, support local businesses, and be part of what’s next for Downtown Pittsburgh.”
– Jeremy Waldrup, President & CEO of the Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership
The PDP has launched a two-part assistance package that includes financial aid for eligible merchants and a robust slate of marketing and promotional efforts to drive visibility and foot traffic throughout the summer and fall. From digital campaigns to community activations and special events, these initiatives are designed to remind the public that Market Square businesses are open.
On the north side of the Square, approximately 20,000 cobblestones have been carefully removed and stored for future use by the City of Pittsburgh. As a nod to the Square’s history, 4,000 of those stones will be repurposed to create new, enlarged tree pits within the new design.
In a step toward a more sustainable and welcoming Downtown, the project is increasing the Square’s tree canopy. While 21 healthy trees will be preserved, 26 are being replaced with 33 new plantings, resulting in a net gain of 7 trees and a 15 percent increase in canopy coverage. The perimeter tree pits are being expanded to improve soil volume and irrigation, with eight new tree pits being added along Market Street.
Crews have confirmed the sub-concrete base beneath the Square is in good condition. In addition, the existing irrigation system is being upgraded and reused where possible, reducing the need for extensive trenching and excavation and helping to minimize disruption throughout the site.
The PDP and YaJagoff! Media are teaming up for Sing the Sign, a playful and interactive campaign that transforms lyric-themed signage into a stage for Pittsburghers to sing their way through Downtown’s transformation!
Through parody performances posted on Instagram by @YaJagoff and @DowntownPitt, the campaign will feature Downtown workers, business owners, and visitors belting out local takes on popular lyrics. Community members are also invited to submit their own “Yinzerfied” lyrics and sign ideas for a chance to be featured on 6’ x 10’ construction signage in Market Square—and Market Square win gift cards.
