Surface, utilities, and anchor pavilion work advances in Downtown Pittsburgh
August 25, 2025 – The Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership (PDP) unveiled the first look at Market Square’s new shared streetscape, marking the next phase of the $15 million modernization project of one of Downtown’s most iconic public spaces. The project, which remains on schedule and on budget, is designed to preserve the Square’s historic character while upgrading infrastructure and amenities for the future.
These new street surfaces and walkways are more than design features, they’re the foundation of a Market Square that will be safer, more accessible, and more welcoming. From upgraded utilities to a modern pavilion, this project is building a stronger Downtown that honors Pittsburgh’s past while preparing for what’s ahead.”

To help businesses navigate the challenges of construction, the PDP launched a two-part assistance package earlier this summer: financial support and promotional initiatives. Through the Event Loss Mitigation Program, eligible merchants affected by the temporary relocation of PDP events received more than $40,000 in the first round of grants, distributed to 13 businesses. A second round of applications is now open.
At the same time, PDP is providing marketing and promotional support to keep businesses visible, including new signage, digital campaigns, content creator partnerships, weekly merchant spotlights, and event-driven promotions. Two new programs in September will be announced soon.
Construction on the north side of the Square is expected to be complete and reopen to the public in late October/early November 2025. The full modernization remains on track for completion in April 2026, ahead of the NFL Draft.
This project is part of the broader revitalization of Downtown announced in 2024 by the Allegheny Conference on Community Development, Allegheny County, City of Pittsburgh, Urban Redevelopment Authority, and Governor Josh Shapiro. Market Square is a key project in the PDP’s broader efforts to position Downtown Pittsburgh as a safe and growing hub for residents, workers, and visitors.
