Professor Matthew Restall, educated at Oxford University and UCLA, is Edwin Erle Sparks Professor of History and Anthropology, and Director of Latin American Studies, at the Pennsylvania State University. His thirty books range from popular music to the Maya to the Spanish conquest, including the prize-winning When Montezuma Met Cortés: The True Story Behind the Meeting That Changed History (2018)

Everything you know about the Aztec Empire and its destruction by Spanish conquistadors is likely wrong. Ever since that world-changing event, its history has been built upon a great deception. What is the big lie? How could it survive so long? And what really happened in Mexico exactly five centuries ago? To find out, join Dr. Matthew Restall at Duquesne University’s Annual History Forum.

On Wednesday, October 27, 2021, at 7:00 p.m. the Department of History will hold its 54th Annual History Forum

This year, the event will be held in Duquesne University's Power Center, Charles J. Dougherty Ballroom and The Fides Shepperson Suite
