From Slavery to Freedom Film Series: Égalité for All

Join us for an online screening of “Égalité for All: Toussaint L’Overture and the Haitian Revolution” on August 18th, as part of the 2021 From Slavery to Freedom Film Series presented by the African American Program of the Heinz History Center in partnership with the Frick Environmental Center of the Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy.

To commemorate the 230th anniversary of the Haitian Revolution, this film is directed by Noland Walker and narrated by Edwidge Danticat. Formerly enslaved Toussaint L’Overture forms a resistance militia that grows into an international freedom movement as Saint Domingue (now Haiti) becomes the second Republic in the Western hemisphere to win its independence from European colonization and the first in world history to overthrow slavery sparking the flashpoint for universal human rights.

In light of the recent assassination of Haiti’s President and the continued turmoil in the nation, Bishop Dr. Leon Pamphile will talk about the film in perspective of Haiti’s current plight.

Leon D. Pamphile is an educator and historian with a focus on Haitian American relations. Following his studies in Haiti in law and education, he earned a master’s degree from the Pittsburgh Theological Seminary and a PhD in education from the University of Pittsburgh. He serves as the Executive Director of FLM Haiti. He is also serving as Bishop with the Church of God in Christ in Haiti overseeing more than 100 churches. In his spare time, he enjoys walking and playing the piano for relaxation.
