In just a few decades, the island of Guam lost nearly all of its native bird species to an invasive species: the Brown Tree Snake. Now, conservationists are planning ahead to protect bird species in the neighboring Mariana Islands. Join Kurt Hundgen, Director of Animal Collections at the National Aviary, in this virtual event to learn about this international effort, known as the Marianas Avifauna Conservation Program. Experts work to relocate threatened birds to snake-free islands, develop education programs to engage citizens of the Mariana Islands in the conservation of their native birds, and establish healthy populations to ensure species’ survival for years to come.
