Tell us a brief history of Henry-Taylor Law

We are a very small firm that started in 2010, after the economic downturn. I took a break for a year to work for another firm, but we started up again and have been in the Fort Pitt Commons location for about 3 or 4 years now. I focus on family and criminal law. I always have a lot of law students that work for me, we have a very lean staff that works very collaboratively. We do a lot of labor-intensive work with people that have very sensitive issues. No matter what’s happening in the world, whether it’s an economic downturn, covid, or storms, etc. people still need to deal with these types of issues. 

Tell us about how you got into the business

I decided when I was in 5^th grade, that I wanted to be a lawyer. In my mind, I had the choice between being a doctor or a lawyer, I chose law and stuck with it. I grew up in New York City, I went to John Jay High School for criminal justice which focuses on the law. I then went to Slippery Rock College so I could get into law school. Ultimately all people who get into law want to help people.

What services do you provide?

We are a litigation-based law firm. Everything we do involves the court system. We focus on family and criminal law, mainly in Allegheny and Butler Counties, but we also work in Westmorland, Washington, and Beaver Counties.

Typical cases we work on would be custody cases, protection from abuse, and adoption. We also service many immigrants.  We do cases called special immigrant juvenile status cases in the family division. There’s a big variety of criminal and family law.  

What makes your business unique?

Our business is unique because we deal with immigrant and diverse populations. We represent refugees, people from the middle east, undocumented children from the south and central America, and the inner-city of Pittsburgh. The diversity of our clients and our cultural competence is very important to us. I am an immigrant myself. We typically always have one Spanish-speaking person in the office allowing us to service a very diverse population. 

What is your favorite part about being in Downtown?

I’ve tried working in the suburbs throughout my career and even though I go to all different counties, I do not like having my office outside of Downtown. I feel like there is a vibrancy of being here, even when it’s a bit quieter because of Covid. I like being able to walk down Grant Street and if I must go to federal court, we can run over easily.

If you had one piece of advice to someone just starting a business in Pittsburgh, what would it be?

Our community is rich in recourses as far as people. There are zero degrees in separation. Always get involved, becoming part of the community is crucial. Many of my referrals have come through these networks. Developing positive relationships and contributing is very important. It’s not just waiting for things to happen; you must be an active participant.
