“An Act of God” at Pittsburgh Public Theater

When I heard Pittsburgh Public Theater would be putting on An Act of God – a play that garnered endless attention with it’s Broadway runs featuring Sean Hayes and Jim Parsons – I knew I had to see it. Known for its raunchy, quick, satirical humor vis-à-vis Saturday Night Live, An Act of God features only three characters: the big guy upstairs and his two best wingmen, Gabriel and Michael.

Marcus Stevens, Point Park University grad and former local stage mainstay, is currently based in New York City, but he returned to Pittsburgh when PPT’s Ted Pappas offered him the role of God. After seeing the show last week, it’s obvious Pappas made the right choice to bring Stevens on for the project. The show centers around God dishing out his new, timely ten commandments for human kind, and Stevens’ delivery of the hilarious one-liners was perfectly delivered.

On top of the heavenly comedic timing by Stevens and John Shepard and Tim McGeever (Gabriel and Michael, respectively) the set design and costumes were… well, angelic. It is, however, important to note that this show is not for the young audience members in your life; PPT recommends you leave little devils under 17 at home.

An Act of God runs at the O’Reilly Theater through July 2, but you should get your tickets to see God soon, because they are sure to go quickly.
