Out and About: Union Standard

Monday, March 20, 2017

Being a fan of Eleven, I was particularly excited to check out chef Derek Stevens’ new Downtown restaurant, Union Standard. I got the chance this weekend when I was having a little Downtown staycation. Upon entry, you are greeted with a beautiful mural, with a mid-century vibe which sets the tone for the simple, but lovely decor of the multi-level restaurant. The menu sticks to the simple, elegant vibe of the space. I started my meal with a half-dozen oysters on the half shell. Given my choice of about 6 varieties, I asked for a mixture, chosen by the chef. They were among some of the best oysters I’ve had in Pittsburgh; it was the perfect start to my meal.

The menu has an excellent selection of small plates, as well as hearty entrees. I decided to stick with some small plates and had phenomenal roasted beets; the preparation was excellent and accompanying the beats, I had a roasted onion spatzle. There simply wasn’t a single bite that I didn’t enjoy. I’m already looking forward to my next visit…especially to check out a rather tempting lamb dish! Currently they are open for dinner only but will be doing lunch and brunch service in the near future.
