Out and About: Colony Cat Cafe

Monday, February 20, 2017

As someone not previously considered a cat person, Colony Cat Cafe has certainly altered my views towards the feline. Located just at the border of Downtown and the Strip District (meaning it’s a too-easy walk from anywhere in Downtown), Pittsburgh’s first cat cafe features three of my favorite things in life: coffee, wine, and adorable animals.

The best part? All of the cats and kittens featured are ready to be adopted to their forever home through a partnership with Animal Friends. We were lucky enough to visit the cat loft during some down time for a preview, and spending 20 minutes with two especially cool cats – Chai and Java – made for the best lunch break I’ve had all week.

And don’t worry: the cat loft is completely separated from the service and cafe area, although guests can have their food and beverages delivered up to the loft in disposable packaging.

Besides the cat loft, the Cafe stands on its own as one of my new favorite places to spend time. Beautifully decorated, the space offers an assortment of delicious snacks to nibble on while getting some work done or enjoying the company of friends. The coffee was some of the best I’ve had in the ‘burgh, and there’s an extensive wine listing that I’m excited about for the next time I head down to Penn Avenue.

Paw-sibly one of the best parts is the extended hours: Colony Cat Cafe is open from 8:00 a.m. – 10:00 p.m. Tuesday – Saturday (although hours to visit the cat loft vary slightly). Head to their website for more information and to reserve time in the cat loft – times are limited to keep from overwhelming the feline residents.
