Out and About: Pork & Beans

Monday, February 13, 2017

I have to admit that one of my favorite parts of working Downtown is being surrounded by countless incredible restaurants. And since being an advocate for Downtown means supporting local businesses, I spend a lot of time visiting those acclaimed eateries.

This passion for good food brought me to Pork & Beans, the latest venture from Richard Deshantz Restaurant Group. The rustic, gritty decor is complete with re-purposed antique signage, a mural of a pig made out of beer cansa wall stacked to the ceiling with firewood, and old wooden boxes on every table packed with four (yes, four) different types of house-made barbecue sauce (none of which disappointed.)

If you want the genuine experience, prepare to get messy. This isn’t necessarily the place to wear your best suit, though they do keep plenty of paper towels on-hand. After some signature cocktails – definitely check out Dixie & the Ghost (it involves bourbon and Gasoline Street Coffee) – and corn fritters and deviled eggs for appetizers, we ordered The Pork & Beans (pictured left.) It was a massive slab of grilled bread covered in cooked greens and then topped with braised shoulder, pork belly, lards, heirloom beans, and turnips. Everything was extremely tender and flavorful.

As if that dinner wasn’t enough, they have Millie’s Homemade Ice Cream and Leona’s Ice Cream Sandwiches on hand – the perfect cherry on top of an already-fulfilling meal. I highly recommend checking out Pork & Beans’ menu and visiting with the carnivore in your life.
