Pittsburgh Passed Go, Collected Prizes and New Favorite Stores with Shopopoly

Monday, September 21, 2020

On Saturday, September 12, Pittsburghers got to rediscover Downtown as a shopping destination, visiting 20 participating retailers while collecting stamps around the neighborhood to win Shopopoly!

During this unique and socially-distanced retail crawl, Downtown’s small business community welcomed in dozens of customers, both people discovering them for the first time and well-known regulars reconnecting after months of online shopping due to COVID-19. More than 200 game cards were completed and turned in, while the sunny day and easy walking between stores helped to showcase our vibrant shopping community.

Participants also enjoyed street performances from local musicians, including Shelley Duff, Elias Khouri, and more, and dined-out before and after with plenty of outdoor dining opportunities.

Congratulations to Peggy W. who won the grand prize diamond ring from Rothschild Trading Company and Brooks Diamonds. Other prize winners include Halle T., Lisa S., Barry B., Rachel C., Sam D., and Emanuel F.

The event’s other grand prize winner, Betty S., won the free one-night stay at the Hotel Monaco, dinner for two at The Commoner, plus a luxury scarf and gift cards to Larrimor’s.

Betty, 88 years old and living in Brighton Heights of Pittsburgh, took the bus into town after reading about Shopopoly in the paper. Her story in Downtown begins with working in the James Reed Building, constructed in 1902 and renovated in 2015 to the then newly-opened Hotel Monaco.

In 1953, after marrying her husband and preparing for a honeymoon in Florida, Betty purchased her first gift for him in Downtown: cologne and swim trunks from Larrimor’s. While her husband has since passed, Betty said she is excited to enjoy her prize by purchasing Christmas gifts for her family.
