An American Canon

May 12, 2026 - May 12, 2026 | 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
Heinz Hall
600 Penn Avenue
Pittsburgh, PA 15222

Guests are invited to an exploration of the historic concerts of Pittsburgh’s Black orchestras, who thrived across the city in the 1930’s, including at St. James AME. Drawing from actual programs from those concerts, Pittsburgh Symphony musicians with host Jacob Joyce will demonstrate the rich tapestry of shared expression through classical music. As part of the on-going collaboration with the Afro-American Music Institute, this program will feature the research of Candace Burgess. Guests can enjoy this one-of-a-kind experience, exploring the music and engaging with PSO musicians like never before.

This performance is presented in honor of the memory of Afro-American Music Institute co-founder, Dr. James T. Johnson.
