Focus: Two Landmark Churches of Downtown

It is difficult to miss the two churches in the 300 block of Sixth Avenue, even amidst the bustle of pedestrians, cars, and busses there. Located side-by-side and elevated slightly above the street, Trinity Cathedral Pittsburgh and First Presbyterian Church of Pittsburgh occupy land deeded to the two congregations by heirs of William Penn in 1787. Designed in variants of Gothic Revival style, the two buildings provide a sober contrast—or perhaps a corrective?—to the dominance of business and commerce Downtown. Just as the churches have several general exterior features in common, their interiors share great mastery and innovation in stained glass, carved wood, and other elements.

Starting at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral and continuing to First Presbyterian Church of Pittsburgh, this comprehensive tour will allow participants to absorb details and experience architectural space in ways that PHLF’s typical tours do not. Both parts of the tour will be led by church staff.

Tour meeting point:  Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, 328 Sixth Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15222 Meet at main entrance to the Cathedral.

Tour ending point:  First Presbyterian Church, 320 Sixth Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15222

Please arrive 15 minutes before start time in order to ensure that the tour gets underway on time.

Accessibility: Both churches are preceded by a flight of stairs from street level, and complete experience of the buildings will require climbing additional stairs.
