Please join Heinz for a professional development and learning opportunity at the History Center! 

June 19th, also known as Juneteenth, commemorates June 19, 1865, when Union Army Gen. Gordon Granger proclaimed the end of slavery to individuals in Galveston, TX, two years after President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation. This day has been recognized as “Freedom Day” or “Emancipation Day” by African-American communities over the years. On June 17, 2021,  President Joe Biden signed the bill making Juneteenth the eleventh American federal holiday. 

Learn about and deepen your understanding of Juneteenth and its history both nationally and regionally. Professional museum staff will share primary sources and local stories from the collections. Participants will leave with curriculum resources to connect their classroom teaching to the Heinz History Center’s resources.  

This program is open to all educators and satisfies PA’s Act 48 ongoing professional development requirements. Light refreshments and drinks will be provided. Please register online.
