Distelfink

Distelfink is a Pennsylvania German word for "Thistle Finch" or the European Goldfinch. Images of this bird are found in Pennsylvania German folk art and symbolize luck and good fortune. Distelfink the music group featuring an original blend of acoustic folk and jazz, mirrors that folk art tradition with light-hearted, happy, and energetic lyrics inspired by travel, love, and Pennsylvania German culture.

Fans have described Distelfink as "the Pennsylvania German Leon Redbone." Ask the finch himself and he might tell you his other influences range from Hoagy Carmichael to Willie Nelson. Dancers and listeners alike have been appreciating the original tunes ever since Distelfink landed in Pittsburgh in late 2018. This project is a celebration of culture and an expression of modern PA German community and life. In his words at the end of every performance, "Come say hi. I want to meet you."
