The inspiration for American musicologist Brian Shimkovitz’s blog Awesome Tapes From Africa, opens new tab launched in 2002, and the cassette was eventually released as an LP in 2015. Ata Kak’s unique sound has been described as a hybrid of highlife, rap, funk, hip-hop, and electronica, presented with the sweaty passion of a Prince record and the lo-fi recording charm of early Chicago house music. Local world music DJ Pandemic Pete opens the evening.
