BNY Mellon Grand Classics: Honeck Conducts Beethoven

Jun 23, 2017 - Jun 25, 2017
Heinz Hall for the Performing Arts
600 Penn Avenue
Pittsburgh, PA 15222

Here, Beethoven's love of nature overflows in impressions of the beautiful countryside-- a babbling brook, then bird calls, a summer storm, and the shepherds' song of thanksgiving. In a program sure to ignite and stimulate the senses, world-renowned German baritone Matthias Goerne joins the orchestra for his debut with Mahler’s Twelve Songs from Des Knaben Wunderhorn. With these songs of love and war, Mahler draws from a treasure trove of folk melodies based on a collection of German poems traversing love, nature, humor and even fairytales. You won't want to miss this tour de force season finale performance of what is celebrated around the world as one of the finest artistic partnerships today, Manfred Honeck and the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. Artists: Manfred Honeck, conductor Matthias Goerne, baritone Program: Beethoven: Symphony No. 6 in F major, Opus 68, "Pastoral" Mahler: Twelve Songs from Des Knaben Wunderhorn
