Join Leslie Przybylek, lead curator of the Smithsonian’s Portraits of Pittsburgh exhibition, for a conversation with artist Susan Johann, whose portrait of August Wilson is featured in the exhibition. Johann will discuss her connection with August Wilson’s portrait, how she framed his portrait, her “Playwrights” series, and her other work in the National Portrait Gallery’s collection.   

Johann will discuss her work with Wilson and her 25-year quest to document the faces of more than 90 legendary American?playwrights, including others in the collection of the National Portrait Gallery, such as Wendy Wasserstein, Tony Kushner, Suzan-Lori Parks, and Arthur Miller. Join us to explore what Johann’s intimate images reveal about the nature of creativity, inspiration, and the relationship between the sitter and the artist.
