Everyone’s a Wiener

Dachshund races have become a quirky and beloved Oktoberfest tradition, adding some four-legged fun to the festivities!

Originating in the U.S. during the 1970s as a playful nod to Germany’s love for the dachshund, these pint-sized pups (known as “wiener dogs”) soon became fan favorites. Today, dachshund races are a staple of many Oktoberfest events, celebrating the breed’s German heritage while spreading laughter and joy to festival-goers young and old, making for a true mashup of beer, brats, and barks!

Vet vaccination records are required for registration.

The Dachshund Races will include 6 dogs and require two human partners for each heat. The first partner will be placed at the starting line with the canine participant, who must be held with two hands until the race begins. The other partner will be located at the other end of the race track and will be responsible for catching the dog at the end of the race. The race will begin upon a countdown to go, at which time the starting line humans will release their dogs to run to the other end of the track. The first dog across the finish line wins, and the top three fastest dogs will receive medals.

  • All dogs must have a current Proof of Rabies Vaccination Certificate. Records are required and a copy must be sent with registration or brought on race day. No race assignments will be made until shot records are received. (tags will not suffice) If you register on site the day of the race, bring a copy of the Rabies Certificate to include with your registration.
  • Please be sure your animal is current on DHPP, Rabies and (suggested) Bordetella vaccines. Parvo and Kennel Cough are highly contagious to young and older dogs, but can even affect a seemingly healthy dog on occasion, if not vaccinated.
  • All dogs must be at least 4 months old and have had all booster shots in addition to the rabies.
  • In celebration of German heritage, dogs must be a Dachshund, this does not mean they must be AKC registered, but must display the characteristics of a Dachshund: floppy eared hound with a long, low body type.
  • You may bring your dog’s favorite toy, ball or stuffed animal to entice your dog to the finish line, but no food is allowed in the racetrack area. (no flashlights, laser pointers or throwing items down the track is allowed)
  • All dogs must be on a leash when not participating in their race.
  • Owners are required to clean up after their pet.
  • All dogs must have two people to race, one as a releaser and one as a catcher.
  • No other dogs are allowed at the event.
  • This racing event is done in the spirit of family fun and enjoyment. We feel that every Weiner is a Winner. Please no arguing with the timers, judges or doggy race staff.
