Keystone Stories: Uncovering the Legacies of Pennsylvania Women

Jun 30, 2024 - Jun 30, 2024 | 2:00 pm - 3:30 pm
Heinz History Center
1212 Smallman St
Pittsburgh, PA 15222

Join the History Center for a panel discussion exploring the art of uncovering women’s untold stories throughout history.

In many cases, the accomplishments of women philanthropists, activists, or business owners were well-known in their own day but then minimized or forgotten as time marched forward. What factors made women’s stories more likely to be lost, and how do researchers recover and amplify missing narratives? What challenges and hurdles do they have to overcome to restore women’s stories to their rightful place in American history?

The panel will include authors Kimberly Hess and Eliza Smith Brown as they share their unique investigative processes for reclaiming the narratives of overlooked women in history. The panel will be moderated by Leslie Przybylek, lead curator of the History Center’s new exhibition, A Woman’s Place: How Women Shaped Pittsburgh, which showcases the stories of barrier-breaking Western Pa. women.

This program is part of Civic Season, presented in partnership with Smithsonian and the History Made By Us national coalition, and the History Center initiative, America 101.
