The Pittsburgh Symphony tunes…Manfred Honeck enters...raises his baton…and the new season begins! Festive showpieces for orchestra: Dvorak’s Scherzo capriccioso, Borodin’s “Polovtsian Dances” (the tune for “Take my hand, I’m a stranger in paradise…”), and a sparkling new work by Julia Wolfe, commissioned for this opening weekend. And “the soulful and immaculate,” (The Guardian of London) James Ehnes plays Saint-Saens’ delightful Introduction and Rondo capriccioso, and inaugurates the season long survey of the great Mozart Violin Concertos. |
