French conductor Emmanuel Krivine makes his PSO debut with Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony, a signature showpiece for the musicians of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. The concert opens with two works by composers paying musical homage to their colleagues. Johannes Brahms pens an inventive theme and variations based on St. Anthony’s Chorale, originally attributed to Haydn, while Boris Blacher creates no less than 16 original variations on Paganini’s daring 24th Caprice, a work that has inspired countless composers across the centuries, from Liszt to Lutoslawski.
