Beethoven’s picturesque “Pastoral” Symphony was inspired by the beauty of the Austrian countryside. From the gentle roll of a passing stream, to a joyous country dance, Beethoven evokes and awakens the feelings that one might have upon entering the outdoors. Dvorak’s masterful Eighth Symphony also capitalizes on the sounds and landscapes of his native Bohemia, drawing inspiration from the Czech folk music that Dvorak knew and loved. Slavic elements abound, from high-spirited polkas to exuberant brass calls and trumpet fanfares. This is Dvorak and his extraordinary melodic writing at its best and most brilliant.
