In recognition of Autism Awareness Month, the Heinz History Center and Western Pennsylvania Sports Museum will host its first-ever Sensory Friendly Days, presented by DICK’s Sporting Goods, on Sunday, April 18 and Monday, April 19.
Sensory Friendly Days will offer individuals of all ages with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) or sensory processing differences the opportunity to experience “the Smithsonian’s home in Pittsburgh” in a comfortable and welcoming environment. The History Center is committed to providing an inclusive environment for all visitors.
In partnership with Autism Connection of Pennsylvania and additional leaders in the region’s autism community, the History Center has identified and implemented modifications to support a more sensory-friendly experience, including but not limited to: mitigation of sudden/loud sounds and motions, lighting adjustments, designated break and rest spaces and family restrooms, and increased directional signage throughout the museum.
