Balafon West African Dance Ensemble – West African Dance

Balafon West African Dance Ensemble (BAH-lah-fone) creates enriching opportunities to experience the joyful spirit of traditional West African dance. Founded by Mama Kadiatou Conte (kah-dee-AH-too con-TAY), a dancer, director, and cultural ambassador who toured the world with Guinea’s national companies, Balafon has trained generations of artists for nearly 30 years, helping Americans reconnect with the traditions of West Africa. Drawing primarily from the traditions of the historic Mali Empire and Senegambia — Guinea and Senegal today — the company performs, teaches community classes, and offers workshops and residencies for schools, corporations, and community organizations, passing these living traditions forward and forging connections with communities across southwestern Pennsylvania. Balafon has called Pittsburgh home since 2010 and is recognized as a Pittsburgh Cultural Treasure.

Geña y Peña play Latin American songs of love and life, music that will take you to Latin America and the Caribbean. This sublime duet is comprised of Puerto Rico-born Geña on vocals and percussion, and Colombian-American Carlos Peña on guitar. Since 2007, they have been playing boleros, montunos, bombas, plenas, sones, chachas and more. Their sound captures the sweet and clear, the romantic and sultry, the beautiful, soulful and lively songs of yesterday.

Please help the Pittsburgh Xiaobo (Sha-bo) Waist Drum Dance Group to celebrate their 10-year anniversary of serving our Pittsburgh community! The joyful drum group dance with cymbals originated in China 2,000 years ago. The group often performs at Grand Opening ceremonies, such as at: PNC Park, the Carnegie Music Hall, the Phipps, Kennywood, the Cranberry & Ross Township Festivals, weddings, schools, universities, and in New York City, Las Vegas, at Seattle’s Space Needle, Cleveland City Hall, and in Shanghai!
