Oct 1, 2021 - Oct 1, 2021
August Wilson African American Cultural Center
980 Liberty Avenue
Pittsburgh, PA 15222
The August Wilson African American Cultural Center and the Greater Pittsburgh Festival of Books are partnering to launch the For August: One Act Play Competition. In the interest of promoting a community of literacy, we are seeking one act submissions from BIPOC theater performers and writers that focus on the quotidien Western Pennsylvania and Appalachian Midwestern experience. Each submission should be minimalist in production and last 10-15 minutes.
Two winners will be selected. Our guest judge is the award-winning poet and playwright, Malcolm Tariq.
The selected submissions will be performed and recorded at the August Wilson African American Cultural Center in their multipurpose room/black box theater on October 15 and have a digital premiere on October 29, 2021. A conversation with art historian, poet, art writer, and LIT Friday curator and host, Jessica Lanay, will follow the performances.
Two winners will be selected. The honorarium for each winner will be $700.00, and each performer will receive a video file of their performance for their archives/records.
Deadline: October 1, 2021
Production Time Frame: October 12 and October 13 are the official dress rehearsal dates where the multipurpose room/black box theater will be made available for the winners. The hours for rehearsal during that day will be split between each winning person/presenting group.
Digital Premiere: October 29, 2021
Submission Fee: Free
