Up Next: Trouble in Mind by Alice Childress
Thursday, August 13 at 7pm EDT
PASSWORD is: PlayTime
The pioneering playwright Alice Childress may have written her fraught and funny play Trouble in Mind in 1955, but her sharp storytelling poignantly addresses issues we continue to reckon with today. The curtain rises on accomplished actress Wiletta Mayer banging on the door of a Broadway theater where she is set to begin rehearsal for a new, “progressive” play. Years of experience navigating the industry as a Black woman have taught her countless lessons, none of which prepare her for the culture clashes that erupt in rehearsal with her white director and fellow cast members as they grapple with the dynamics of power, race, and ego on stage and off. History has revealed Childress as a visionary artist far ahead of her time, and redefined this moving backstage drama as a timeless classic.
Join us to hear this play in our PlayTime reading directed by Monteze Freeland, before Trouble in Mind finally opens on Broadway in 2022, over fifty years after its Broadway premiere was announced but never came to be. The cast features: E. Faye Butler, David Cabot, Tracey Conyer-Lee, Wali Jamal, Carter Redwood, Erika Strasburg, David Whalen, and Joe York.
