PORT AUTHORITY MEDIA ADVISORY: WABASH TUNNEL CLOSED APRIL 15 – END OF MAY
The Wabash Tunnel will close completely for 3-4 weeks beginning Monday, April 15 at 6 a.m. so that Port Authority contractors may begin installation of new traffic control gates. This work will help restore inbound access to the tunnel, which has been closed since the fall.

Inbound access to the tunnel was closed in late October when a tractor trailer accident damaged the gates that allow Port Authority to safely control the direction of auto traffic. Since then, efforts to repair the damage and reopen the tunnel to inbound motorists have been hampered by two additional accidents and delays in procuring replacement parts.

Completion of repairs and restoration of all traffic access is expected by the end of May.  The Wabash Tunnel provides a shortcut for motorists between Route 51 and the South Side. No Port Authority transit service operates through the tunnel.

The closure will occur from 10 p.m. Thursday to 5 a.m. on Friday. Crews will working on an overhead bridge.

Posted detour:
• Take the Centre Avenue/Consol Energy Center exit
• Make left onto Washington Place
• Continue to Bigelow Boulevard
