Northbound Route 885 Boulevard of the Allies Weekend Closure April 19-22 in Pittsburgh

PennDOT District 11 is announcing a full weekend closure of the northbound Boulevard of Allies (Route 885) in the City of Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, will occur Friday night, April 19 through Monday morning, April 22 weather permitting.

​The northbound (inbound) lanes of the Boulevard of the Allies will close to traffic between Craft Avenue and Jumonville Street from 8 p.m. Friday night continuously through 6 a.m. Monday morning.  Additionally, the following ramps will close: 

Northbound Boulevard of the Allies ramp to westbound (inbound) I-376 (Parkway East) will close from 8 p.m. Friday continuously through 5 a.m. Wednesday morning, April 24

The ramp from Fifth Avenue to northbound Boulevard of the Allies will close from 8 p.m. Friday night continuously through 6 a.m. Monday morning.

Additionally, northbound Route 885 and the above listed ramps will close to traffic from 8 p.m. Thursday night, April 18 to 6 a.m. Friday morning, April 19. Crews will conduct preparatory work for the upcoming weekend closure.

Crews will conduct concrete expansion dam replacement, concrete patching and repairs, and miscellaneous construction activities.  This work was originally schedule for the weekend of April 12-15 but was postponed due to inclement weather.

Preservation work on two mainline Route 885 Boulevard of the Allies bridges and several ramps at the interchange are included in this $35.41 million project. Work will include bridge deck repairs and overlays, expansion dam replacements, steel superstructure and substructure repairs, bearing replacements, full painting, concrete substructure repairs, downspout replacements, drainage repairs, signing and pavement parking upgrades and other miscellaneous construction activities. Motorists will encounter short term lane closures, night and weekend closures of the ramps and Route 885 in each direction, weekend lane restrictions, and overnight directional closures of I-376 Parkway East, long-term closures of Forbes Avenue, Brady Street, and ramps at the Birmingham Bridge. Short-term and weeknight lane closures of Second Avenue are also included throughout this multi-year project.

Overnight Westbound I-376 Fort Pitt Bridge Lane Restriction Thursday Night in Pittsburgh

PennDOT District 11 is announcing a westbound I-376 (Fort Pitt Bridge) overnight lane restriction in the City of Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, will occur Thursday night, April 18 weather permitting.

A single-lane restriction will occur on the Fort Pitt Bridge in the westbound direction from 10 p.m. Thursday night until 5 a.m. Friday morning. PennDOT crews will conduct deck spall repairs.


Smithfield Street Bridge Overnight Closures Next Week in Pittsburgh

PennDOT District 11 is announcing overnight closures of the Smithfield Street Bridge which carries Route 3027 over the Monongahela River in the City of Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, will occur Monday through Thursday nights, April 15-18 weather permitting.

The Smithfield Street Bridge will close to traffic in both directions between Fort Pitt Boulevard and Carson Street from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. each night. Crews will conduct preparatory work in advance of the first weekend closure. Work includes concrete removal and installation work. Traffic will be detoured.

This $8.49 million bridge preservation project includes steel repairs, spot painting, replacing existing sidewalk in two of the four spans, replacing the epoxy deck surface, concrete deck repairs, concrete and masonry substructure repairs, as well as upgrades to the lane control system and installation of pedestrian signals at the Fort Pitt Boulevard intersection. The project also includes minor preservation work to the bridge carrying Smithfield Street over Station Square Drive. The project will have single-lane traffic maintained throughout the project duration with two full weekend closures expected. Bus traffic will be maintained during the weekend closures and pedestrian access will be maintained throughout the project. The project is expected to be completed in the summer of 2024.

Fort Duquesne Bridge Lane Restrictions Begin Thursday in Pittsburgh

PennDOT District 11 is announcing lane restrictions on the I-279 Fort Duquesne Bridge and associated ramps in the City of Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, will occur Thursday through Sunday, April 11-14 weather permitting.

​Lane closures and traffic shifts will occur according to the following schedule: 

Thursday and Friday, April 11-12 – Single-lane restrictions will occur in the southbound lanes (lower deck) of the southern end of the Fort Duquesne Bridge from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day. All ramps will remain open.

Saturday, April 13 – Single-lane restrictions will occur on the northbound lane of I-279 approaching the Fort Duquesne Bridge from 6 a.m. to noon.

Sunday, April 14 – Single-lane restrictions will occur on the 10th Street Bypass ramp to the Fort Duquesne Bridge from 6 a.m. to noon

Crews from the Sofis Rigging Company will conduct the routine inspections.


Route 885 Boulevard of the Allies Overnight Lane Restrictions Next Week in Pittsburgh

​PennDOT District 11 is announcing lane restrictions on Route 885 (Boulevard of the Allies) in the City of Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, will occur Monday through Thursday nights, April 8-11 weather permitting.

Single-lane restrictions will occur as needed in both directions on Route 885 in the area of the Birmingham Bridge from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. each night. Crews will conduct preparatory work expansion dam replacement.

Overnight closures of the ramp carrying traffic from westbound (inbound) I-376 (Parkway East) to I-579 Boulevard of the Allies/Liberty Bridge (Exit 72B) will occur from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. Monday night through Thursday night, April 8-11.  As a reminder, the ramp closure will occur weeknights as needed through the end of 2024. Ramp traffic will be detoured.

Overnight Liberty Bridge Washing in Pittsburgh

PennDOT District 11 is announcing overnight bridge washing activities on the Liberty Bridge (Route 3069) in the City of Pittsburgh, Allegheny County will occur Monday through Thursday nights, April 8-11 weather permitting.

Bridge washing operations requiring overnight lane restrictions on the Liberty Bridge in both directions will occur from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. each night through Thursday night, April 11.

Crews from Green Acres Contracting will conduct the bridge washing work.


I-376 Parkway East Single-lane Restriction in Churchill, Wilkins, Penn Hills, and Monroeville

PennDOT District 11 is announcing a single-lane restriction on I-376 (Parkway East) in Churchill Borough, Wilkins Township and the Municipalities of Penn Hills and Monroeville, Allegheny County, will begin Monday, April 1 weather permitting.

Starting 6 p.m. Monday, I-376 will be down to two lanes of traffic in each direction between the Churchill/Route 130 (Exit 79B) interchange and the Monroeville/Route 48 (Exit 84A) exit through late November. Crews will conduct concrete median barrier replacement, roadway rehabilitation, expansion dam replacements, concrete rehabilitation, modified concrete overlays, paving, and bridge painting.

This work is part of the $70.1 million I-376 Parkway East Betterment Project. Work will include a superstructure replacement over Old William Penn Highway, two bridge rehabilitations over Old William Penn Highway/Lougay Road/Sunset Drive and Thompson Run Road/Thompson Run/Union Railroad, and six bridge preservations along the I-376. Throughout the project motorists can expect long-term single-lane restrictions, several weekends with traffic down to a single lane, and a long-term crossover in 2025. The improvements on the 4.5 miles of the Parkway East between the Churchill/Route 130 (Exit 79B) and Monroeville/Route 48 (Exit 84A) exits are anticipated to conclude in the fall 2026. Swank Construction Company, LLC is the prime contractor.

Boulevard of the Allies to Eastbound I-376 Overnight Ramp Closures in Pittsburgh

​PennDOT District 11 is announcing overnight closures of the southbound Route 885 (Boulevard of the Allies) ramp to eastbound I-376 (Parkway East) in the City of Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, will resume Monday night, March 18 weather permitting.

The closure of the southbound (outbound) Route 885 Boulevard of the Allies ramp to eastbound (outbound) I-376 Parkway East will occur as needed nightly from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. through the end of December. Crews will conduct concrete painting operations, bridge repair work, and miscellaneous construction activities. Ramp traffic will be detoured.

Smithfield Street Bridge Phase Change in Pittsburgh

Beginning at 6 a.m. Tuesday morning, a single lane of traffic will close long-term on the bridge. Bi-directional traffic will be maintained on the bridge. Additionally, the eastern sidewalk will remain open during this phase of construction, while the western sidewalk will be closed. Motorists will see lane restrictions on East Carson Street, Fort Pitt Boulevard, and I-376 (Parkway East). Details will be provided in advance of the restrictions being implemented.
