As Market Square businesses struggle through a $5 million construction project that has disrupted traffic and closed streets, the Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership announced a marketing campaign Wednesday to attract customers.
The "March Market Square Marketing Blitz" offers two options to win $25 gift cards for merchants in that area. Customers can either make a purchase at a participating business, or, take a photo of themselves with a purchase and a Market Square bumper sticker, and e-mail it to the PDP. Photos will be posted on the PDP's Facebook page, and voted on by the page's fans.
“While all of the businesses in Market Square have remained open during construction, there is the perception that either places are closed or are difficult to get to, and that’s not the case,” Michael Edwards, president and CEO of the PDP, said in a prepared statement. “This cross-media campaign is designed to encourage shopping and to generate excitement about the grand reopening of Market Square in a few months.”
The construction project will reconfigure Market Square into a pedestrian-only shopping area, with no through traffic.
