Dark Horse
In Todd Solondz's newest film, a romance - of sorts - blooms between Abe and Miranda, two 30-somethings in arrested development. Abe still lives with his parents. A toy collector, his lack of physical charm is matched by his personality, apparently stuck somewhere around 13. Abe's social life consists of playing backgammon with his mother (Mia Farrow), a pursuit that loses its appeal when he meets Miranda (Selma Blair), who has moved back in with her parents. But just when Abe's about to get what his heart desires, things start to go horribly wrong. Solondz's ability to draw comedy out of the most painful situations makes Dark Horse a treat, albeit one that'll have you squirming. (Todd Solondz; USA; 2011; 84 min)
